Here is the crown of the gods' genealogy: among the twelve Adityas, Vishnu is again proclaimed as 'the youngest, yet He on whom the worlds are established' (yatra lokah pratishthitah). This recurring description is significant: the world does not stand of itself but rests upon the Lord as its support and foundation. Here is a confession of Vishnu as the Supreme Reality (ashraya), the support of all existence: the gods, the worlds, and time itself are all established upon Him. Also significant is the birth of Dharma 'from the breast of Brahma' in human form, with his sons Peace, Joy, and Desire: dharma is the source of happiness and peace of mind; where dharma is, there is Peace (Shama) and Joy (Harsha). And the image of Shukra, roaming the universe for its welfare (yoga-kshema), shows that even the heavenly bodies serve the sustaining of life by the will of the Creator. Thus the list of gods is not an empty enumeration but a confession of the world-order, resting on Vishnu and ordered by dharma.
