Here the genealogy turns to another branch of creation — the Rudras, the sons of Brahma, and the daughters of Daksha. It is significant that the ten wives of Dharma are not mere names but personified virtues: Fame, Steadfastness, Faith, Intellect, Modesty, Understanding — and they are called the 'gates of dharma.' Here lies a profound teaching: dharma is not abstract but is embodied in concrete virtues of the heart; to attain dharma is to cultivate within oneself Faith, Steadfastness, Modesty (before sin), and Intellect. It is through these 'gates' that one enters righteousness. It is also significant that Daksha, having no sons, makes his daughters heirs (putrika): tradition honors the daughter equally with the son in continuing the lineage. And the twenty-seven wives of Soma (the Moon) — the lunar constellations (nakshatras) — 'share in the movement of time': thus tradition weaves together myth and cosmos, showing that behind the heavenly bodies and the passage of time stand living divine powers ordering the 'course of the world.' Nothing in creation is accidental or lifeless.
