Here the genealogy arrives at the threshold of the main narrative: Pratipa is named, along with his sons — Devapi, Shantanu, and Bahlika. It is significant that the eldest, Devapi, “seeking dharma, withdrew into asceticism”: he renounced the kingdom for the sake of a spiritual path, and so Shantanu became king — the father of Bhishma and (through Satyavati and Vyasa) grandfather of Pandu and Dhritarashtra. Here stands Devapi's honorable choice: some prefer renunciation to a kingdom, and such a choice is good. It is telling that the names in this passage (Pratipa, Shantanu, Bahlika, Dhritarashtra, Pandu) already directly anticipate the heroes of the epic: we stand at the very source of the main drama. Thus the long genealogy (from Daksha and Manu, through Yayati, Puru, Bharata, Kuru) arrives finally at Shantanu — from whom (in the chapters that follow) the tale of the birth of Bhishma, the Pandavas, and the Kauravas will unfold. In this majestic convergence of ages and lineages toward a single point lies an image of providence preparing the appearance of the Lord (Krishna) and the purification of the earth through this family: the whole long genealogy is, as it were, the setting of the stage for the descent of God and the great drama of dharma.
