Here Janamejaya asks for the genealogy to be told again, more fully — and shows [the quality of] reverent listening. The king's word is telling: "listening to it, I cannot be sated, for it is like the tasting of nectar." Here is the mark of a sacred teaching: it gives rise not to satiety but to ever-growing thirst; the more one hearkens, the more one longs to hear. This is the opposite of worldly pleasures (which sate and pall); the nectar of the sacred word never runs dry. It is also telling that the king asks for the full (vistara) retelling, though he has already heard the brief one: the reverent listener is not wearied by the repetition of the sacred, but rejoices in it. Thus the scripture — through Janamejaya's own words — teaches us to attend to the tradition not hastily, for information's sake, but with love, as to nectar. And that Vaishampayana recounts it "as heard from Dvaipayana [Vyasa]" once again shows the paramparā — the faithful transmission of the sacred word from teacher to disciple.
