Here is told, briefly, the birth of the Pandavas — and Pandu's sorrowful fate. Significant is the curse of the slain sage, in the form of a deer: Pandu, who killed him in a moment of love, is himself condemned to die in a moment of love; the retribution matches the offense, the killing of those joined in union. Here stands the stern law of karma, and — more deeply — a warning about the hunt, again, as in chapter 63, the violence of the chase brings calamity. Significant too is that the Pandavas are sons of gods, Dharma, Vayu, Indra, the Ashvins, born to Kunti and Madri out of necessity, because of Pandu's curse: thus providence, through a curse, arranges the birth of god-born heroes, instruments of dharma. Both Kunti's devotion, sharing her blessing with her rival Madri, and Madri's fidelity, ascending the pyre, are images of the wives' nobility. Note too the first wickedness of the Kauravas, the house of lac, foiled by Vidura: thus already in this brief survey the enmity is marked — as is the righteousness that guards against it, Vidura. This is a condensed repetition, compare chapter 55, linking the genealogy to the main narrative.
