Here the genealogy reaches the immediate ancestors of the heroes: Shantanu, Bhishma, Satyavati, Vyasa, Dhritarashtra, Pandu, Vidura. Bhishma's deed, only mentioned here in passing, is significant: "wishing to please his father, he took Satyavati as his wife" — behind this brief phrase stands his great vow, told in full later. Significant too is that when the line was about to be cut off, by the death of Shantanu's sons without offspring, it is Vyasa who continues it, by niyoga, at the mother's request: thus the line is saved — though no longer by Shantanu's direct blood, but through Vyasa, Satyavati's son by Parashara. Here is the working of providence: Vyasa himself, the literary embodiment of Vishnu, is the progenitor of the heroes of the coming drama; thus the creator of the epic stands also at the source of the line about which he writes. Significant too is the birth of Dhritarashtra, blind, Pandu, pale, and Vidura, of a servant woman — their bodily marks, whose causes come later, already foretell their fates. And the hundred sons of Dhritarashtra, led by Duryodhana, have already been named: we stand at the very threshold of the central tragedy. Thus the genealogy has fulfilled its purpose — it has led to the heroes; and in the remaining chapters a brief survey of their fates and the continuation of the line beyond the war will follow.
