Here a detailed genealogy traces the line back to Daksha and Manu and descends through Yayati, Puru and many kings. It is significant that almost every name carries a noted deed: sacrifices performed (three ashvamedhas, ten thousand purushamedhas), quarters of the world conquered, a withdrawal into the forest in old age. Here is the ideal of a royal line: its greatness lies not in conquest alone, but in sacrifice (yajna) and righteousness; the kings of this line are sacrificers and ascetics. Notable too is the wondrous account of the Sarasvati choosing Matinara as her husband: the river — goddess of wisdom and speech — descends to a righteous king; thus the tradition weaves together the human and the divine, showing heaven's favour toward a pious line. What might seem a dry list of names and marriages (to princesses of many lands — Vidarbha, Kalinga, Videha) reveals something else as well: the line of Puru is a hub with which all the kingdoms of Bharata become kin; thus the genealogy is an image of the unity, through marriage, of many peoples in a single royal tree. This is the preparation of the stage for the central drama.
