Here the genealogy descends from Dushyanta (and Bharata) to Pratipa, grandfather of Bhishma — and once again, as if by a seal, the two celebrated verses about Bharata are repeated (already given in chapters 68-69). It is significant that the saying on the oneness of father and son ('the son is that very father by whom he was begotten') and the etymology of 'Bharata' ('the Sustained One') recur: the tradition loves to return to its central truths. Significant too is the mention of the founding of Hastinapura by Hastin — the very capital where the drama of the Kauravas and Pandavas will unfold; thus the genealogy 'names the places' of the action to come. And at the center stands the birth of Kuru, from Samvarana and Tapati, daughter of the Sun: the union of the lunar line (Puru) and the solar line (Tapati) in the house of Kuru — so the greatest of lines is a confluence of two celestial dynasties. The hundred and twenty-four sons of Ajamidha, founders of many kingdoms, are once more an image of how vast is the kinship of the Bharatas: nearly every king on earth is their relation. Thus the genealogy arrives at Pratipa — and, in the chapters to follow, at Shantanu, with whom the central narrative will begin.
