Here the years pass, and the grown Devavrata appears — a son in every way like his father and skilled in every weapon. It is notable that after Ganga's departure Shantanu 'found no more delight in his wives': fidelity to a beloved memory and restraint mark him even now. Here is the purity of an attachment that does not seek replacement in new pleasures. Notable too is that the son, 'in form, character and learning' just like his father, shows that nobility is transmitted not by blood alone but by upbringing and example; a worthy father raises a worthy son. In this is the fruit of parampara in miniature, within the family: virtue is inherited when elders embody it themselves. And already here the fullness of Devavrata's gifts is stressed — earthly and heavenly weapons, strength, valor, nobility: the scripture is preparing us for the fact that this prince, perfect in everything, will voluntarily renounce both throne and progeny, and thereby his sacrifice will be all the more magnificent.
