गन्धर्व उवाच
अनग्नयो ऽनाहुतयो न च विप्रपुरस्कृताः ॥
यूयं ततो धर्षिताः स्थ मया पाण्डवनन्दन ॥

Here the reason for the vulnerability is stated -- the absence of sacred protection. It is telling that it was not strength that left the Pandavas defenseless, but the lack of a pious arrangement: without fires, oblations, and a brahmin to lead them, they were deprived of an unseen defense. Here it is revealed that ritual and the presence of a holy man guard a person against unseen forces: piety is a shield that valor alone cannot replace. Thus the scripture shows that even the strongest need spiritual protection; and it was this omission, not weakness, that left the Pandavas open to attack.
