Vasishtha said: "This daughter of yours named Tapati, the younger sister of Savitri — her I am asking of you in marriage for Samvarana, O Vibhavasu. For that king, of great renown, versed in dharma and artha, noble of mind, is a fitting husband for your daughter, O sky-goer."

Here a saint intercedes on behalf of a worthy suitor. It is significant that Vasishtha proposes for the maiden by vouching not for the king's wealth but for his dharma and discernment: the worth of a groom is measured by virtue, not by rank alone. The mediation of the righteous is what binds together a union of the good: a brahmin who knows the character of both sides brings worthy people together. Thus the scripture shows the proper order of matchmaking — through a respected intermediary and according to merit; and in this Vasishtha shows himself in service to marital harmony.
