कृच्छ्रे द्वादशरात्रे तु तस्य राज्ञः समापिते ॥
आजगाम विशुद्धात्मा वसिष्ठो भगवान् ऋषिः ॥
तपसाराध्य वरदं देवं गोपतिम् ईश्वरम् ॥
लेभे संवरणो भार्यां वसिष्ठस्यैव तेजसा ॥

"When the arduous twelve-night vow of that king was completed, the pure-souled, blessed sage Vasishtha came. Having propitiated the boon-granting god by austerity, Samvarana obtained his wife — by the very power of Vasishtha."

Here it is stated plainly by what the desired object was won — "by the power of Vasishtha." It is significant that the fruit is credited not to the king's own austerity but to the tapas of the family priest: what the king sought in vain is granted by the power of the saint. Here is shown how effective the intercession of a true guru is: his spiritual power makes up for the disciple's insufficiency. Thus the scripture shows that a person attains the highest not by his own strength alone, but by the grace and merit of the teacher; and the whole story of Tapati exalts precisely this power of the purohita.
