स चक्रे तात लोकानां विनाशाय महामनाः ॥
सर्वेषाम् एव कार्त्स्न्येन मनः प्रवणम् आत्मनः ॥
इच्छन्न् अपचितिं कर्तुं भृगूणां भृगुसत्तमः ॥
सर्वलोकविनाशाय तपसा महतैधितः ॥
तापयाम् आस लोकान् स सदेवासुरमानुषान् ॥
तपसोग्रेण महता नन्दयिष्यन् पितामहान् ॥
sa cakre tāta lokānāṃ vināśāya mahāmanāḥ ||
sarveṣām eva kārtsnyena manaḥ pravaṇam ātmanaḥ ||
icchann apacitiṃ kartuṃ bhṛgūṇāṃ bhṛgusattamaḥ ||
sarvalokavināśāya tapasā mahataidhitaḥ ||
tāpayām āsa lokān sa sadevāsuramānuṣān ||
tapasogreṇa mahatā nandayiṣyan pitāmahān ||
"The great-minded one turned, child, his whole mind toward the destruction of the worlds. Desiring to exact retribution for the Bhrigus, the best of the Bhrigus, grown great through austerity, in order to destroy all the worlds scorched the worlds -- with gods, asuras and men -- through fierce, great austerity, wishing thereby to gladden his forefathers."

Here vengeance for one's own turns into a threat to all that exists. It is significant that Aurva plans to destroy "all the worlds" -- even the gods and the innocent: wrath, seeking to avenge a lineage, does not distinguish the guilty from the guiltless. Here the boundlessness of unchecked fury is laid bare: once given free rein, it outgrows every measure of justice and threatens to consume everything. Significant, too, is Aurva's delusion -- that the destruction of the worlds would "gladden his forefathers": vengeance imagines itself a debt of love. Thus the scripture shows the danger of wrath masquerading as piety; and this very danger will move the forefathers to restrain him.
