यदा तु मृत्युर् आदातुं न नः शक्नोति सर्वशः ॥
तदास्माभिर् अयं दृष्ट उपायस् तात संमतः ॥
आत्महा च पुमांस् तात न लोकांल् लभते शुभान् ॥
ततो ऽस्माभिः समीक्ष्यैवं नात्मनात्मा विनाशितः ॥

अनुवाद
"But when death was in no way able to take us, then this method was found by us, child, and approved by us. And a man who kills himself, child, does not attain the blessed worlds; therefore, having considered thus, we did not destroy ourselves by our own hand."

Here the most important law is proclaimed: suicide destroys rather than saves. It is significant that the Bhrigus, though wishing to die, still did not lay hands upon themselves: "a self-slayer does not attain the blessed worlds" -- and so they chose death at another's hand rather than their own. Here is a firm condemnation of suicide: to cut short by one's own will a life given from above is a sin that bars the blessed abodes; one must wait for the appointed time. Thus the scripture shows the distinction: to desire release from the body is permitted, but to kill oneself willfully is not; and the wisdom of the Bhrigus lies in that they did not transgress this law.
