एवं विक्रोशमानायास् तस्याः स सुनृशंसकृत् ॥
भर्तारं भक्षयाम् आस व्याघ्रो मृगम् इवेप्सितम् ॥
तस्याः क्रोधाभिभूताया यद् अश्रु न्यपतद् भुवि ॥
सो ऽग्निः समभवद् दीप्तस् तं च देशं व्यदीपयत् ॥

अनुवाद
'While she was crying out thus, that doer of cruel deeds devoured her husband, as a tiger devours its coveted prey. And her tears, overcome with wrath, that fell to the ground, turned into blazing fire and scorched that region.'

Here the crime is committed despite the plea -- and tears turn into fire. It is telling that the plea did not stop the one possessed: an evil deaf to everything devours the innocent before his wife's eyes. Telling too is the miracle of her grief: her tears, falling to the ground, burst into flame -- the sorrow of trampled righteousness itself cries out for retribution. Here it is shown that the suffering of the innocent is not powerless: her tears burn like fire and call out for punishment. Thus scripture reveals the formidable power of righteous grief; and the flame born of the brahmin woman's tears foreshadows the curse about to fall upon the king.
