तस्मात् त्वम् अपि दुर्बुद्धे मच्छापपरिविक्षतः ॥

यस्य चर्षेर् वसिष्ठस्य त्वया पुत्रा विनाशिताः ॥
तेन संगम्य ते भार्या तनयं जनयिष्यति ॥
स ते वंशकरः पुत्रो भविष्यति नृपाधम ॥

patnīm ṛtāv anuprāpya sadyas tyakṣyasi jīvitam ||

sa te vaṃśakaraḥ putro bhaviṣyati nṛpādhama ||
'"Therefore you too, O evil-minded one, struck by my curse, will part with your life at once should you approach your wife in her season; but your wife, uniting with that sage Vasishtha whose sons you destroyed, will bear your son -- the continuer of the lineage, O worst of kings."'

Here the curse foreordains both punishment and unlooked-for good. It is telling that the future niyoga is already contained within the curse itself: the king is forbidden to beget an heir himself, and so his son will be born of Vasishtha. Here it is seen that even the curse is woven into a higher design: the brahmin woman's punishment will later turn into the continuation of the lineage by the very hand of the sage whose sons the king destroyed -- providence intertwines retribution and restoration as one. Thus scripture shows that the niyoga with Vasishtha was not willfulness but the fulfillment of what the curse had foreordained; and by this Arjuna's perplexity is resolved.
