देवनागरी
अतो ऽन्यथा चेत् क्रियते न हितं नो भविष्यति ॥
तवाप्य् अकीर्तिः सकला भविष्यति न संशयः ॥
कीर्तिरक्षणम् आतिष्ठ कीर्तिर् हि परमं बलम् ॥
नष्टकीर्तेर् मनुष्यस्य जीवितं ह्य् अफलं स्मृतम् ॥

अनुवाद
'If it is done otherwise, no good will come to us; and you too will have utter disgrace, without doubt. Guard the preservation of your fame, for fame is the highest strength; for the life of a man whose fame is lost is deemed fruitless.'

Here fame is exalted as a moral force. The saying is significant: 'fame is the highest strength,' and a life without a good name is fruitless. Here one sees the truth that a good name, earned through righteousness, is worth more than power and wealth: a kingdom dishonestly gained destroys one's fame. Thus the scripture shows the price of honor; and Bhishma warns Duryodhana against the disgrace of wrongdoing.
