देवनागरी
न चापि दोषेण तथा लोको वैति पुरोचनम् ॥
यथा त्वां पुरुषव्याघ्र लोको दोषेण गच्छति ॥
तद् इदं जीवितं तेषां तव कल्मषनाशनम् ॥
संमन्तव्यं महाराज पाण्डवानां च दर्शनम् ॥

Here the rescue of the innocent appears as a cleansing for the guilty. It is significant that Bhishma sees in the Pandavas' return a mercy toward Duryodhana: their survival washes away his guilt for the villainy that failed. Here it is revealed that Providence, in saving the innocent, also opens a path of repentance for the wrongdoer. Thus the scripture shows the twofold mercy of this deliverance; and Bhishma calls on Duryodhana to accept it as a gift, not to reject it.
