तान् पाद्य-मधुपर्क-अर्हान्tān pādya-madhuparka-arhānThem, worthy of water for the feet and of madhuparka,
मान-अर्हान् सत्-कृतिम् गतान्māna-arhān sat-kṛtim gatānworthy of honor, come for a reception,
प्रत्युत्थाय जरासंधःpratyutthāya jarāsaṃdhaḥrising, Jarasandha
उपतस्थे यथा-विधिupatasthe yathā-vidhireceived according to rite;
उवाच च एतान् राजा असौuvāca ca etān rājā asauand that king said to them,
स्वागतम् वः अस्तु इति प्रभुःsvāgatam vaḥ astu iti prabhuḥ"Welcome to you" — the lord;

Here even the formidable tyrant shows a virtue — reverence for brahmins, for whose sake he rises even at midnight. It is telling that a spark of good exists even in a villain: the text does not paint him wholly black but truthfully shows the mixture. Thus it is revealed that evil is rarely without an admixture of good — and hence its fate is tragic; and further follows his puzzlement before his guests.
