[Dhritarashtra:] "This terrible, tumultuous, hair-raising deed has been done by those who dragged the ascetic Panchali into the midst of the assembly. Who, except a player at wicked dicing, would scorn her — not born from a womb, beautiful, born in a noble lineage, radiant, knower of all dharmas, renowned — and drag her into the midst of the assembly? Her, in her impure days, fair-hipped, sprinkled with blood, in a single garment, Panchali, gazing upon the Pandavas — stripped of wealth, fallen in spirit, deprived of their wife, deprived of fortune, denied every desired blessing, fallen into the state of slaves, bound by the noose of dharma, as if powerless in valor. At the enraged, unforbearing Krishna, suffering in the assembly of the Kurus, Duryodhana and Karna spoke bitter words. From the glance of her pitiable eyes the very earth would burn; will any remnant at all be left of my sons today, O Sanjaya?"

In his late repentance Dhritarashtra himself pronounces the verdict on what was done: "who, except a player at wicked dicing," would have dared such a thing? — he finally calls the outrage by its name. And his fear is not without cause: "the very earth would burn" from the glance of the wronged woman — he senses that the wrath of violated purity is a force capable of incinerating entire lineages. His words "will any remnant be left of my sons" are telling: having glimpsed the irreversibility of what has happened, the father already mourns his sons as doomed. The verse teaches that recognition of sin, arriving after the deed, only multiplies anguish without averting punishment; that the tears and wrath of trampled innocence cry out to heaven for retribution; and that the guilty one, having finally seen clearly, perceives ahead not deliverance but only the measure of the ruin he himself has prepared.
