[Dhritarashtra:] "All the women of the Bharatas, gathering together with Gandhari, cried out there in terror, seeing Krishna brought into the assembly. The evening agnihotra fires were not kindled anywhere; and the brahmins were enraged at the dragging of Draupadi. A fearsome roar sounded, and a great whirlwind arose; terrible meteors fell from the sky, and Rahu devoured the sun. And likewise in the chariot-sheds the flesh-devouring fire blazed up; and the banners crumbled — to the ruin of the Bharatas. In Duryodhana's agnihotra fire the jackals howled terribly, and in answer the donkeys brayed from every side. Then Bhishma departed together with Drona, O Sanjaya, and Kripa, and Somadatta, and Bahlika, the great chariot-warrior."

Dhritarashtra recalls not only the omens of the elements, but also the outcry of the women, the wrath of the brahmins, and the extinguished sacrificial fires: everything sacred and everything human turned away at once from what was done. The extinguished agnihotra is an all-encompassing image: where purity is trampled, sacrifice itself ceases, for a defiled house is unfit for offering. The departure of Bhishma, Drona, and the elders is their silent verdict: the worthy would not remain present at the disgrace, though they did not stop it. The verse teaches that wrong defiles the very altar and severs the house from the sacred; that nature, ritual, and the conscience of men unanimously testify against the violation of the innocent; and that the departure of the righteous from a spectacle of evil they did not halt is both a condemnation of the wrongdoers and a reproach to those who departed.
