The gods, led by Shatakratu, came to drink the soma obtained by the sages' tapas. The sages, having performed the ishti according to rule upon a well-kindled fire, offered havya for all the celestials. Summoned, Hutavaha, the Wondrous One, came forth from the solar disc, arrived at the ahavaniya, whither the brahmins had brought him with mantras, and received the manifold havya, to convey it to the gods. As he departed, he saw the wives of the great sages sitting and bathing in their ashramas at their ease. They shone like golden altars, were pure as crescents of the moon, like tongues of flame and like stars, wondrous to behold. Seeing the wives of the twice-born lords, Agni's senses were troubled and he fell under the sway of desire. Then he reflected: "It is not right that I am troubled. I desire the virtuous wives of brahmins, who do not desire me. I cannot look upon them or touch them without cause; I will enter the garhapatya fire and gaze upon them continually from there." Abiding in the garhapatya, he seemed to touch them all with his golden tongues of flame and rejoiced, but remaining long under the sway of desire and not obtaining the wives of the brahmins, he resolved to abandon his body and went off into the forest. Svaha, daughter of Daksha, who had loved Agni since long ago, learned that he had gone into the forest, consumed by desire, and thought: "Taking on the forms of the seven sages' wives, I will unite with Pavaka, enchanted by their appearance. Thus he will be satisfied, and I will attain what I desire."

Agni recognizes the wrongness of his desire and does not violate the sages' wives. Svaha, in turn, becomes the mediator through whom disordered passion will be turned into the birth of the gods' protector.
