विश्वस्तस्यैति यो दारान् यश् चापि गुरुतल्पगः ॥
वृषलीपतिर् द्विजो यश् च पानपश् चैव भारत ॥
शरणागतहा चैव सर्वे ब्रह्महणैः समाः ॥
एतैः समेत्य कर्तव्यं प्रायश्चित्तम् इति श्रुतिः ॥
गृही वदान्यो ऽनपविद्धवाक्यः; शेषान्नभोक्ताप्य् अविहिंसकश् च ॥
नानर्थकृत् त्यक्तकलिः कृतज्ञः; सत्यो मृदुः स्वर्गम् उपैति विद्वान् ॥
सुलभाः पुरुषा राजन् सततं प्रियवादिनः ॥
अप्रियस्य तु पथ्यस्य वक्ता श्रोता च दुर्लभः ॥
यो हि धर्मं व्यपाश्रित्य हित्वा भर्तुः प्रियाप्रिये ॥
अप्रियाण्य् आह पथ्यानि तेन राजा सहायवान् ॥

sulabhāḥ puruṣā rājan satataṃ priyavādinaḥ ||
apriyasya tu pathyasya vaktā śrotā ca durlabhaḥ ||
yo hi dharmaṃ vyapāśritya hitvā bhartuḥ priyāpriye ||
apriyāṇy āha pathyāni tena rājā sahāyavān ||
The Vedas declare that contact with such men requires expiation. He who accepts the teaching of the wise; who is versed in the rules of morality; who is generous; who, before eating, first offers food to the gods and the ancestors; who envies no one; who is incapable of doing anything that harms others; who is grateful, truthful, humble, and learned -- such a man attains success in reaching heaven. Many indeed, O king, are those who can always speak pleasant words. But rare is the speaker -- and rare too the listener -- of words that are unpleasant yet wholesome. The man who, disregarding what is pleasing or displeasing to his master and keeping only virtue in view, speaks what is unpleasant but wholesome, truly strengthens the king. For the sake of the family, one may sacrifice a member; for the sake of the village, one may sacrifice a family; for the sake of the kingdom, one may sacrifice a village; and for the sake of one's own soul, one may sacrifice the whole earth. One should guard one's wealth against the calamities that may befall it; with one's wealth one should protect one's wives; and with both wealth and wives one should protect oneself.
