अहो बत महत् पापं कर्तुं व्यवसिता वयम् ॥
यद् राज्यसुखलोभेन हन्तुं स्वजनम् उद्यताः ॥
यदि माम् अप्रतीकारम् अशस्त्रं शस्त्रपाणयः ॥
धार्तराष्ट्रा रणे हन्युस् तन् मे क्षेमतरं भवेत् ॥
एवम् उक्त्वार्जुनः संख्ये रथोपस्थ उपाविशत् ॥
विसृज्य सशरं चापं शोकसंविग्नमानसः ॥
aho bata mahat pāpaṃ kartuṃ vyavasitā vayam ||
yad rājyasukhalobhena hantuṃ svajanam udyatāḥ ||
yadi mām apratīkāram aśastraṃ śastrapāṇayaḥ ||
dhārtarāṣṭrā raṇe hanyus tan me kṣemataraṃ bhavet ||
evam uktvārjunaḥ saṃkhye rathopastha upāviśat ||
visṛjya saśaraṃ cāpaṃ śokasaṃvignamānasaḥ ||
"Alas! We have resolved to commit a great sin: out of greed for the pleasure of the kingdom, we are ready to kill our own kin. If the armed sons of Dhritarashtra should kill me in battle, unarmed and offering no resistance, that would be better for me." Having said this on the battlefield, Arjuna, his mind overwhelmed by grief, cast aside his bow with its arrows and sat down on the seat of his chariot.
