Sanjaya said: 'Listen attentively, O king, and having heard, understand. The Pandavas employ no hidden power of mantras, no illusion of that kind, and no terror-working device. They fight in accordance with right, and they are mighty in battle. All deeds, O Bharata, are called righteous when done through dharma; the Parthas always undertake them, longing for great fame. These mighty ones, endowed with dharma, do not turn back from battle; they are joined with the highest fortune. Where dharma is, there is victory. Therefore the Parthas are invulnerable in battle and joined with victory, O king. Your sons, however, are evil-minded, ever devoted to sin, cruel and base in their deeds; therefore they fail in battle. Your sons, O lord of men, have committed here many cruelties against the Pandavas, as though they were vile men. The Pandavas, O eldest of the line of Pandu, restrained themselves all this while, disregarding the sin of your sons, though those men constantly refused to admit their guilt. But your sons, O lord of men, do not esteem them. Now has come the great and terrible fruit of this continually committed evil, resembling the poisonous kimpaka fruit: taste it now, great king, together with your sons and friends. You did not understand, O king, though your friends restrained you: Vidura, Bhishma, the great-souled Drona, and I myself warned you more than once. When you were restrained, you would not accept the beneficial and wholesome word, as a mortal refuses wholesome medicine. Having adopted your sons' opinion, you considered the Pandavas defeated. Now listen again, truly, best of the Bharatas, to that which you ask of me: I shall tell you, subduer of foes, the cause of the Pandavas' victory, as I have heard it.'

Sanjaya strips the events of any veil of superstitious fear: the Pandavas' victory is not explained by secret spells. The cause is named directly — dharma. The war returns to each man the fruit of his own actions, and Dhritarashtra's political blindness proves to be a spiritual inability to accept wholesome counsel.
