एतच् छ्रुत्वा वचस् तस्य कारुण्याद् बहुविस्तरम् ॥
प्रत्युवाच ततः कृष्णः सान्त्वयानो युधिष्ठिरम् ॥
धर्मपुत्र विषादं त्वं मा कृथाः सत्यसंगर ॥
यस्य ते भ्रातरः शूरा दुर्जयाः शत्रुसूदनाः ॥
अर्जुनो भीमसेनश् च वाय्वग्निसमतेजसौ ॥
माद्रीपुत्रौ च विक्रान्तौ त्रिदशानाम् इवेश्वरौ ॥
मां वा नियुङ्क्ष्व सौहार्दाद् योत्स्ये भीष्मेण पाण्डव ॥
त्वत्प्रयुक्तो ह्य् अहं राजन् किं न कुर्यां महाहवे ॥
हनिष्यामि रणे भीष्मम् आहूय पुरुषर्षभम् ॥
पश्यतां धार्तराष्ट्राणां यदि नेच्छति फल्गुनः ॥
यदि भीष्मे हते राजञ् जयं पश्यसि पाण्डव ॥
हन्तास्म्य् एकरथेनाद्य कुरुवृद्धं पितामहम् ॥
पश्य मे विक्रमं राजन् महेन्द्रस्येव संयुगे ॥
विमुञ्चन्तं महास्त्राणि पातयिष्यामि तं रथात् ॥
यः शत्रुः पाण्डुपुत्राणां मच्छत्रुः स न संशयः ॥
मदर्था भवदर्था ये ये मदीयास् तवैव ते ॥
तव भ्राता मम सखा संबन्धी शिष्य एव च ॥
मांसान्य् उत्कृत्य वै दद्याम् अर्जुनार्थे महीपते ॥
एष चापि नरव्याघ्रो मत्कृते जीवितं त्यजेत् ॥
एष नः समयस् तात तारयेम परस्परम् ॥
स मां नियुङ्क्ष्व राजेन्द्र यावद् द्वीपो भवाम्य् अहम् ॥
प्रतिज्ञातम् उपप्लव्ये यत् तत् पार्थेन पूर्वतः ॥
घातयिष्यामि गाङ्गेयम् इत्य् उलूकस्य संनिधौ ॥
परिरक्ष्यं च मम तद् वचः पार्थस्य धीमतः ॥
अनुज्ञातं तु पार्थेन मया कार्यं न संशयः ॥
अथ वा फल्गुनस्यैष भारः परिमितो रणे ॥
निहनिष्यति संग्रामे भीष्मं परपुरंजयम् ॥
अशक्यम् अपि कुर्याद् धि रणे पार्थः समुद्यतः ॥
त्रिदशान् वा समुद्युक्तान् सहितान् दैत्यदानवैः ॥
निहन्याद् अर्जुनः संख्ये किम् उ भीष्मं नराधिप ॥
विपरीतो महावीर्यो गतसत्त्वो ऽल्पजीवितः ॥
भीष्मः शांतनवो नूनं कर्तव्यं नावबुध्यते ॥

yadi bhīṣme hate rājañ jayaṃ paśyasi pāṇḍava ||
hantāsmy ekarathenādya kuruvṛddhaṃ pitāmaham ||
paśya me vikramaṃ rājan mahendrasyeva saṃyuge ||
vimuñcantaṃ mahāstrāṇi pātayiṣyāmi taṃ rathāt ||
yaḥ śatruḥ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ macchatruḥ sa na saṃśayaḥ ||
madarthā bhavadarthā ye ye madīyās tavaiva te ||
tava bhrātā mama sakhā saṃbandhī śiṣya eva ca ||
māṃsāny utkṛtya vai dadyām arjunārthe mahīpate ||
eṣa cāpi naravyāghro matkṛte jīvitaṃ tyajet ||
eṣa naḥ samayas tāta tārayema parasparam ||
sa māṃ niyuṅkṣva rājendra yāvad dvīpo bhavāmy aham ||
pratijñātam upaplavye yat tat pārthena pūrvataḥ ||
ghātayiṣyāmi gāṅgeyam ity ulūkasya saṃnidhau ||
parirakṣyaṃ ca mama tad vacaḥ pārthasya dhīmataḥ ||
anujñātaṃ tu pārthena mayā kāryaṃ na saṃśayaḥ ||
atha vā phalgunasyaiṣa bhāraḥ parimito raṇe ||
nihaniṣyati saṃgrāme bhīṣmaṃ parapuraṃjayam ||
aśakyam api kuryād dhi raṇe pārthaḥ samudyataḥ ||
tridaśān vā samudyuktān sahitān daityadānavaiḥ ||
nihanyād arjunaḥ saṃkhye kim u bhīṣmaṃ narādhipa ||
viparīto mahāvīryo gatasattvo 'lpajīvitaḥ ||
bhīṣmaḥ śāṃtanavo nūnaṃ kartavyaṃ nāvabudhyate ||
Having heard this long speech, full of compassion, Krishna began to comfort Yudhishthira and replied: 'Son of Dharma, true to your word, do not give way to despair. Your brothers are brave, hard-to-conquer destroyers of enemies: Arjuna and Bhimasena blaze with power equal to wind and fire, and the valiant sons of Madri are like lords of the gods. Or, out of friendship, entrust this to me, Pandava: I will fight with Bhishma. At your bidding, O king, what would I not do in the great battle? If Phalguna does not wish it, I will challenge Bhishma, the finest of men, and strike him down in battle before the eyes of the sons of Dhritarashtra. If you see victory following Bhishma's death, Pandava, I will today, alone upon my chariot, slay the aged grandsire of the Kurus. Behold, O king, my prowess, like that of Mahendra in battle: while he is loosing his great weapons, I will topple him from his chariot. Whoever is the enemy of the sons of Pandu is, without doubt, my enemy as well. Those who are for my sake are for yours; those who are mine are yours. Your brother is my friend, my kinsman, and my disciple; for Arjuna's sake, lord of the earth, I would even carve the flesh from my own body and give it. And this tiger among men would give up his life for my sake. Such is our pact, dear one: we are bound to carry each other across. So entrust this to me, lord of kings, while I can still be your refuge. What Partha once vowed at Upaplavya, in the presence of Uluka -- "I will strike down the son of Ganga" -- that word of the wise Partha I must keep. If Partha permits it, I will do this myself, without doubt. Or else this is the burden allotted to Phalguna in the battle: he will slay Bhishma, conqueror of enemy cities, in the fight. When Partha rises up in battle, he is capable of the impossible; in combat Arjuna would destroy even the gods, were they to come arrayed together with the daityas and danavas -- how much more so Bhishma, lord of men. Surely the mighty Bhishma, son of Shantanu, is now clouded in mind, his former strength spent, his life near its end, and does not perceive what must be done.'
