कथं जयेम धर्मज्ञ कथं राज्यं लभेमहि ॥
प्रजानां संक्षयो न स्यात् कथं तन् मे वदाभिभो ॥
भवान् हि नो वधोपायं ब्रवीतु स्वयम् आत्मनः ॥
भवन्तं समरे राजन् विषहेम कथं वयम् ॥
न हि ते सूक्ष्मम् अप्य् अस्ति रन्ध्रं कुरुपितामह ॥
मण्डलेनैव धनुषा सदा दृश्यो ऽसि संयुगे ॥
नाददानं संदधानं विकर्षन्तं धनुर् न च ॥
पश्यामस् त्वा महाबाहो रथे सूर्यम् इव स्थितम् ॥
नराश्वरथनागानां हन्तारं परवीरहन् ॥
क इवोत्सहते हन्तुं त्वां पुमान् भरतर्षभ ॥
वर्षता शरवर्षाणि महान्ति पुरुषोत्तम ॥
क्षयं नीता हि पृतना भवता महती मम ॥
यथा युधि जयेयं त्वां यथा राज्यं भवेन् मम ॥
भवेत् सैन्यस्य वा शान्तिस् तन् मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥
ततो ऽब्रवीच् छांतनवः पाण्डवान् पाण्डुपूर्वज ॥
न कथं चन कौन्तेय मयि जीवति संयुगे ॥
युष्मासु दृश्यते वृद्धिः सत्यम् एतद् ब्रवीमि वः ॥
निर्जिते मयि युद्धे तु ध्रुवं जेष्यथ कौरवान् ॥
क्षिप्रं मयि प्रहरत यदीच्छथ रणे जयम् ॥
अनुजानामि वः पार्थाः प्रहरध्वं यथासुखम् ॥
एवं हि सुकृतं मन्ये भवतां विदितो ह्य् अहम् ॥
हते मयि हतं सर्वं तस्माद् एवं विधीयताम् ॥
युधिष्ठिर उवाच
ब्रूहि तस्माद् उपायं नो यथा युद्धे जयेमहि ॥
भवन्तं समरे क्रुद्धं दण्डपाणिम् इवान्तकम् ॥
शक्यो वज्रधरो जेतुं वरुणो ऽथ यमस् तथा ॥
न भवान् समरे शक्यः सेन्द्रैर् अपि सुरासुरैः ॥

prajānāṃ saṃkṣayo na syāt kathaṃ tan me vadābhibho ||

bhavantaṃ samare rājan viṣahema kathaṃ vayam ||
na hi te sūkṣmam apy asti randhraṃ kurupitāmaha ||
maṇḍalenaiva dhanuṣā sadā dṛśyo 'si saṃyuge ||
nādadānaṃ saṃdadhānaṃ vikarṣantaṃ dhanur na ca ||
paśyāmas tvā mahābāho rathe sūryam iva sthitam ||
narāśvarathanāgānāṃ hantāraṃ paravīrahan ||
ka ivotsahate hantuṃ tvāṃ pumān bharatarṣabha ||
varṣatā śaravarṣāṇi mahānti puruṣottama ||
kṣayaṃ nītā hi pṛtanā bhavatā mahatī mama ||
yathā yudhi jayeyaṃ tvāṃ yathā rājyaṃ bhaven mama ||
bhavet sainyasya vā śāntis tan me brūhi pitāmaha ||
tato 'bravīc chāṃtanavaḥ pāṇḍavān pāṇḍupūrvaja ||
na kathaṃ cana kaunteya mayi jīvati saṃyuge ||
yuṣmāsu dṛśyate vṛddhiḥ satyam etad bravīmi vaḥ ||
nirjite mayi yuddhe tu dhruvaṃ jeṣyatha kauravān ||
kṣipraṃ mayi praharata yadīcchatha raṇe jayam ||
anujānāmi vaḥ pārthāḥ praharadhvaṃ yathāsukham ||
evaṃ hi sukṛtaṃ manye bhavatāṃ vidito hy aham ||
hate mayi hataṃ sarvaṃ tasmād evaṃ vidhīyatām ||
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca
brūhi tasmād upāyaṃ no yathā yuddhe jayemahi ||
bhavantaṃ samare kruddhaṃ daṇḍapāṇim ivāntakam ||
śakyo vajradharo jetuṃ varuṇo 'tha yamas tathā ||
na bhavān samare śakyaḥ sendrair api surāsuraiḥ ||

कथम् राज्यम् लभेमहिkatham rājyam labhemahihow shall we obtain the kingdom; how are we to gain power
प्रजानाम् संक्षयः न स्यात्prajānām saṃkṣayaḥ na syātthat there be no destruction of the people; so that the folk do not perish
कथम् तत् मे वद अभिभोkatham tat me vada abhibhotell me this, lord; declare it to me
भवान् हि नः वधोपायम्bhavān hi naḥ vadhopāyamyou yourself are the means of your own defeat; you yourself are the way to overcome you
ब्रवीतु स्वयम् आत्मनःbravītu svayam ātmanaḥlet him speak of himself; tell of yourself
भवन्तम् समरे राजन्bhavantam samare rājanyou in battle, O king; you on the field
विषहेम कथम् वयम्viṣahema katham vayamhow shall we withstand you; how are we to endure against you
न हि ते सूक्ष्मम् अपिna hi te sūkṣmam apifor you have not even the slightest; you have not the faintest
अस्ति रन्ध्रम् कुरुपितामहasti randhram kurupitāmahaflaw, O grandsire of the Kurus; vulnerability
मण्डलेन एव धनुषाmaṇḍalena eva dhanuṣāwith the very circle of the bow; with the circular motion of the bow
सदा दृश्यः असि संयुगेsadā dṛśyaḥ asi saṃyugeyou are always seen in battle; you are always visible on the field
न आददानम् संदधानम्na ādadānam saṃdadhānamneither taking up nor fitting the arrow; nor when you draw an arrow
विकर्षन्तम् धनुः न चvikarṣantam dhanuḥ na canor drawing the bow; nor stretching the bowstring
पश्यामः त्वा महाबाहोpaśyāmaḥ tvā mahābāhodo we see you, mighty-armed one; we do not notice you
रथे सूर्यम् इव स्थितम्rathe sūryam iva sthitamstanding on the chariot like the sun; standing like the sun
नराश्वरथनागानाम्narāśvarathanāgānāmof men, horses, chariots, elephants; of infantry, cavalry, chariots, elephants
हन्तारम् परवीरहन्hantāram paravīrahanthe slayer, destroyer of enemy heroes; the exterminator
कः इव उत्सहते हन्तुम्kaḥ iva utsahate hantumwho is able to kill; who would dare to strike down
त्वाम् पुमान् भरतर्षभtvām pumān bharatarṣabhayou, O bull of the Bharatas; such a man
वर्षता शरवर्षाणिvarṣatā śaravarṣāṇipouring showers of arrows; when you rain down arrows
महान्ति पुरुषोत्तमmahānti puruṣottamagreat ones, best of men; vast torrents
क्षयम् नीता हि पृतनाkṣayam nītā hi pṛtanāfor the army has indeed been brought to ruin; the host has been driven to destruction
भवता महती ममbhavatā mahatī mamamy great one, by you; my vast force
यथा युधि जयेयम् त्वाम्yathā yudhi jayeyam tvāmhow might I defeat you in battle; how am I to overcome you
यथा राज्यम् भवेत् ममyathā rājyam bhavet mamahow the kingdom might become mine; how power will be mine
भवेत् सैन्यस्य वा शान्तिःbhavet sainyasya vā śāntiḥor there might be peace for the army; and peace for the host
तत् मे ब्रूहि पितामहtat me brūhi pitāmahatell me this, grandsire; declare it to me, grandfather
ततः अब्रवीत् शांतनवःtataḥ abravīt śāṃtanavaḥthen the son of Shantanu spoke; after this Bhishma answered
पाण्डवान् पाण्डुपूर्वजpāṇḍavān pāṇḍupūrvajato the Pandavas, descendant of Pandu; to the sons of Pandu
न कथं चन कौन्तेयna kathaṃ cana kaunteyain no way, Kaunteya; under no circumstances
मयि जीवति संयुगेmayi jīvati saṃyugewhile I live in battle; during my lifetime
युष्मासु दृश्यते वृद्धिःyuṣmāsu dṛśyate vṛddhiḥgrowth is seen in you; success is visible to you
सत्यम् एतत् ब्रवीमि वःsatyam etat bravīmi vaḥI tell you this truth; I speak the truth to you
निर्जिते मयि युद्धे तुnirjite mayi yuddhe tuwhen I am defeated in battle; after my defeat
ध्रुवम् जेष्यथ कौरवान्dhruvam jeṣyatha kauravānyou will surely conquer the Kauravas; you will certainly overcome the Kurus
क्षिप्रम् मयि प्रहरतkṣipram mayi praharatastrike me quickly; smite me swiftly
यदि इच्छथ रणे जयम्yadi icchatha raṇe jayamif you desire victory in battle; if you want victory
अनुजानामि वः पार्थाःanujānāmi vaḥ pārthāḥI permit you, O Parthas; I allow you
प्रहरध्वम् यथासुखम्praharadhvam yathāsukhamstrike as you wish; hit as you please
एवम् हि सुकृतम् मन्येevam hi sukṛtam manyefor thus I consider it good; thus I consider it right
भवताम् विदितः हि अहम्bhavatām viditaḥ hi ahamfor I am known to you; you know me
हते मयि हतम् सर्वम्hate mayi hatam sarvamwhen I am slain, all is slain; with my death everything is settled
तस्मात् एवम् विधीयताम्tasmāt evam vidhīyatāmtherefore let it be done thus; act accordingly
युधिष्ठिर उवाचyudhiṣṭhira uvācaYudhishthira said; Yudhishthira spoke
ब्रूहि तस्मात् उपायम् नःbrūhi tasmāt upāyam naḥtell us therefore the means; declare the method
यथा युद्धे जयेमहिyathā yuddhe jayemahihow we shall win in battle; so that we may overcome
भवन्तम् समरे क्रुद्धम्bhavantam samare kruddhamyou enraged in battle; you furious on the field
दण्डपाणिम् इव अन्तकम्daṇḍapāṇim iva antakamlike Antaka with his rod; like Death with his staff
शक्यः वज्रधरः जेतुम्śakyaḥ vajradharaḥ jetumthe wielder of the thunderbolt can be conquered; one can defeat Indra
वरुणः अथ यमः तथाvaruṇaḥ atha yamaḥ tathāVaruna and Yama too; also Varuna and Yama
न भवान् समरे शक्यःna bhavān samare śakyaḥbut you cannot be in battle; you are impossible
सेन्द्रैः अपि सुरासुरैःsendraiḥ api surāsuraiḥeven by the gods and asuras with Indra; even by the whole host
अनुवाद

"How shall we win, knower of dharma? How shall we obtain the kingdom? Tell me how it may be done so that the people are not destroyed, my lord. You yourself must tell us the way to defeat you. How can we withstand you in battle, O king? For you, grandsire of the Kurus, have not even the slightest weakness: in battle you are always seen only through the circling movement of your bow. We never see you take up an arrow, fit it to the string, or draw the bow, mighty-armed one; you stand upon your chariot like the sun. What man, O bull of the Bharatas, would dare to kill you, the slayer of men, horses, chariots and elephants, the destroyer of enemy heroes? When you pour down your vast showers of arrows, best of men, my great army has been brought to ruin by you. Tell me, grandsire, how I may defeat you in battle, how the kingdom may become mine, and how my army may find peace." Then the son of Shantanu spoke to the Pandavas, descendant of Pandu: "In no way, son of Kunti, while I live in battle, will you find success. I speak the truth to you. But once I am defeated in battle, you will surely conquer the Kauravas. Therefore strike me down quickly, if you desire victory in battle. I permit you, O Parthas: strike me as you wish. This I consider right; you know me well. When I am slain, all is decided — so act accordingly." Yudhishthira said: "Then tell us the way to defeat you in battle, enraged like Antaka with his rod. The wielder of the thunderbolt can be defeated, as can Varuna and Yama, but you cannot be overcome in battle even by the gods and asuras led by Indra."
