अनुवाद

Sanjaya said: 'While they were still fighting, the sun set, a dreadful twilight fell, and we could no longer see the battle. Then King Yudhishthira, seeing the twilight, O Bharata, and also his army being slaughtered by Bhishma, slayer of foes -- having cast away its weapons, turned back, and given itself over to flight -- and seeing too the furious Bhishma pursuing the great chariot-warriors in battle, and the Somakas defeated and stripped of courage, thought long, sank into deep reflection, and resolved to withdraw the troops. After this King Yudhishthira ordered the withdrawal of his armies; at that same time your troops were withdrawn as well. Having carried out the withdrawal, the great warriors, wounded in the fighting, made camp, O best of the Kurus. The Pandavas, sorely tormented by Bhishma, brooded over his deeds in battle and could find no peace. But Bhishma, having conquered the Pandavas together with the Srinjayas in battle, honored by your sons and praised, O Bharata, encamped together with the Kurus, who rejoiced on every side. Then night fell, bewildering all beings. In that dreadful onset of night the Pandavas together with the Vrishnis, and the unassailable Srinjayas, sat down in council. All these mighty men, skilled in reaching decisions, calmly discussed what was, for the moment, their own highest good. After a long council, O king, Yudhishthira looked at Vasudeva and spoke these words.'
