भीष्म उवाच
न चेच् छक्यम् अथोत्स्रष्टुं वैरम् एतत् सुदारुणम् ॥
अनुजानामि कर्ण त्वां युध्यस्व स्वर्गकाम्यया ॥
विमन्युर् गतसंरम्भः कुरु कर्म नृपस्य हि ॥
यथाशक्ति यथोत्साहं सतां वृत्तेषु वृत्तवान् ॥
अहं त्वाम् अनुजानामि यद् इच्छसि तद् आप्नुहि ॥
क्षत्रधर्मजितांल् लोकान् संप्राप्स्यसि न संशयः ॥
युध्यस्व निरहंकारो बलवीर्यव्यपाश्रयः ॥
धर्मो हि युद्धाच् छ्रेयो ऽन्यत् क्षत्रियस्य न विद्यते ॥
प्रशमे हि कृतो यत्नः सुचिरात् सुचिरं मया ॥
न चैव शकितः कर्तुं यतो धर्मस् ततो जयः ॥

na cec chakyam athotsraṣṭuṃ vairam etat sudāruṇam ||
anujānāmi karṇa tvāṃ yudhyasva svargakāmyayā ||
vimanyur gatasaṃrambhaḥ kuru karma nṛpasya hi ||
yathāśakti yathotsāhaṃ satāṃ vṛtteṣu vṛttavān ||
ahaṃ tvām anujānāmi yad icchasi tad āpnuhi ||
kṣatradharmajitāṃl lokān saṃprāpsyasi na saṃśayaḥ ||
yudhyasva nirahaṃkāro balavīryavyapāśrayaḥ ||
dharmo hi yuddhāc chreyo 'nyat kṣatriyasya na vidyate ||
praśame hi kṛto yatnaḥ sucirāt suciraṃ mayā ||
na caiva śakitaḥ kartuṃ yato dharmas tato jayaḥ ||

न चेत् शक्यम् अथ उत्स्रष्टुम्na cet śakyam atha utsraṣṭumif then it is impossible to abandon; if this cannot be cast aside
वैरम् एतत् सुदारुणम्vairam etat sudāruṇamthis terrible enmity; this dreadful feud
अनुजानामि कर्ण त्वाम्anujānāmi karṇa tvāmI give you leave, Karna; I grant you permission
युध्यस्व स्वर्गकाम्ययाyudhyasva svargakāmyayāfight, desiring heaven; battle, longing for paradise
विमन्युः गतसंरम्भःvimanyuḥ gatasaṃrambhaḥwithout anger, your fury gone; having set aside vehemence
कुरु कर्म नृपस्य हिkuru karma nṛpasya hiperform indeed the king's task; carry out your duty to the king
यथाशक्ति यथोत्साहम्yathāśakti yathotsāhamaccording to your strength, according to your zeal; as much as you are able
सताम् वृत्तेषु वृत्तवान्satām vṛtteṣu vṛttavānabiding in the conduct of the virtuous; following the ways of the worthy
अहम् त्वाम् अनुजानामिaham tvām anujānāmiI give you leave; I grant you permission
यत् इच्छसि तत् आप्नुहिyat icchasi tat āpnuhiobtain what you desire; attain what you wish
क्षत्रधर्मजितान् लोकान्kṣatradharmajitān lokānthe worlds won by the warrior's dharma; the abodes gained by a warrior's duty
संप्राप्स्यसि न संशयःsaṃprāpsyasi na saṃśayaḥyou shall attain, there is no doubt; you shall surely obtain
युध्यस्व निरहंकारःyudhyasva nirahaṃkāraḥfight without pride; battle without self-conceit
बलवीर्यव्यपाश्रयःbalavīryavyapāśrayaḥrelying on strength and valor; trusting in your might
धर्मः हिdharmaḥ hiduty indeed; dharma truly
युद्धात् श्रेयः अन्यत्yuddhāt śreyaḥ anyathigher than battle, other duty; better than combat, another
क्षत्रियस्य न विद्यतेkṣatriyasya na vidyatedoes not exist for a kshatriya; a warrior has none
प्रशमे हि कृतः यत्नःpraśame hi kṛtaḥ yatnaḥindeed effort was made toward peace; an attempt was made at reconciliation
सुचिरात् सुचिरम् मयाsucirāt suciram mayāby me for a very long time; for a long while
न च एव शकितः कर्तुम्na ca eva śakitaḥ kartumand yet it could not be accomplished; it did not succeed
यतः धर्मः ततः जयःyataḥ dharmaḥ tataḥ jayaḥwhere dharma is, there is victory; whence dharma, thence victory
अनुवाद

Bhishma said: "If then this terrible enmity cannot be abandoned, I give you leave, Karna: fight, desiring heaven. Without anger, your fury set aside, perform the king's task, following the ways of the worthy, according to your strength and zeal. I grant you permission: obtain what you desire. Without doubt you shall attain the worlds won by the warrior's dharma. Fight without pride, relying on your strength and valor. For a kshatriya there is no duty higher than battle. Long, and yet again long, have I labored for peace, but I could not achieve it. Where dharma is, there is victory."
