वार्धक्षेमिः कलिङ्गानां यः कन्याम् आहरद् युधि ॥
अनाधृष्टिर् अदीनात्मा कस् तं द्रोणाद् अवारयत् ॥
भ्रातरः पञ्च कैकेया धार्मिकाः सत्यविक्रमाः ॥
इन्द्रगोपकवर्णाश् च रक्तवर्मायुधध्वजाः ॥
मातृष्वसुः सुता वीराः पाण्डवानां जयार्थिनः ॥
तान् द्रोणं हन्तुम् आयातान् के वीराः पर्यवारयन् ॥
यं योधयन्तो राजानो नाजयन् वारणावते ॥
षण् मासान् अभिसंरब्धा जिघांसन्तो युधां पतिम् ॥
धनुष्मतां वरं शूरं सत्यसंधं महाबलम् ॥
द्रोणात् कस् तं नरव्याघ्रं युयुत्सुं प्रत्यवारयत् ॥

ṣaṇ māsān abhisaṃrabdhā jighāṃsanto yudhāṃ patim ||
dhanuṣmatāṃ varaṃ śūraṃ satyasaṃdhaṃ mahābalam ||
droṇāt kas taṃ naravyāghraṃ yuyutsuṃ pratyavārayat ||
Vardhakshemi, who in battle carried off a maiden [princess] of the Kalingas, the unassailable, unbroken in spirit -- who held him back from Drona? The five brothers, the Kaikeyas, righteous, faithful to their heroism, crimson like the indragopaka [beetles], with red armor, weapons, and banners, sons of the maternal aunt [of the Pandavas], heroes desiring the Pandavas' victory -- them, who had come to slay Drona, what heroes held back? The one whom the enraged kings, fighting for six months at Varanavata, striving to kill him, could not overcome -- the best of bowmen, a hero true to his vow, mighty in strength, the tiger among men, Yuyutsu -- who held him back from Drona?

The roll-call of the Pandavas' kin and allies continues -- the Kaikeyas, 'sons of the maternal aunt,' desiring their victory: here kinship by blood coincides with faithfulness to the truth, and the near of kin stand with the near of kin in the righteous cause. Notable is the mention of Varanavata -- the city where the Kauravas once plotted to burn the Pandavas alive: the memory of that old crime is woven into the roll-call, recalling the root of the enmity. The verse teaches that in a righteous cause kinship and dharma converge, and blood-relations become companions in truth; that past misdeeds are not forgotten but echo in the present; and that a host gathered by both the bonds of blood and devotion to dharma is doubly strong.
