यः पुत्रं काशिराजस्य वाराणस्यां महारथम् ॥
समरे स्त्रीषु गृध्यन्तं भल्लेनापहरद् रथात् ॥

[Dhrishtadyumna—] who in battle at Varanasi cast down from his chariot, with a broad-headed arrow, the son of the king of Kashi, a mighty chariot-warrior, who at the bridal contest had lusted after the maidens; Dhrishtadyumna, the great archer, keeper of the Pandavas' counsel, appointed to Duryodhana's ruin and created for Drona's destruction, who incinerates warriors in battle and crushes them on every side, advancing straight upon Drona — what heroes held him back? And the one raised as if upon Drupada's own lap, most skilled in weapons — Shaikhandin, Kshatradeva — what heroes held him back from Drona?

Dhrishtadyumna is said to have been 'made for Drona's destruction' — born from the sacrificial fire for this very purpose: the supreme ordainer prepares the instrument of retribution long in advance. Thus Drona's fate, now being mourned, was inscribed before the war itself began — in the very birth of his slayer. It is significant that Dhrishtadyumna is called 'keeper of the Pandavas' counsel': he is not only the striking hand but also the mind, the wisdom of the army. The verse teaches that the instruments of the higher will are fashioned in advance, and the sentence ripens before the offense; that retribution is inescapable, for it is woven into the very fabric of events; and that the union in one man of striking force and guarding intellect makes him doubly formidable against wrong.
