जयद्रथस्य गोप्तारस् ततः क्षुब्धाः सहानुगाः ॥
ते दृष्ट्वा सहसा पार्थं गोप्तारः सैन्धवस्य तु ॥
चक्रुर् नादान् बहुविधान् कम्पयन्तो वसुंधराम् ॥
बाणशब्दरवांश् चोग्रान् विमिश्राञ् शङ्खनिस्वनैः ॥
प्रादुश्चक्रुर् महात्मानः सिंहनादरवान् अपि ॥
तं श्रुत्वा निनदं घोरं तावकानां समुत्थितम् ॥
प्रदध्मतुस् तदा शङ्खौ वासुदेवधनंजयौ ॥

वाय्वीरितः इव अम्बुदःvāyvīritaḥ iva ambudaḥlike a cloud driven by the wind; like a cloud swept along by the wind

जयद्रथस्य गोप्तारःjayadrathasya goptāraḥthe protectors of Jayadratha; the guardians of Jayadratha

ततः क्षुब्धाः सहानुगाःtataḥ kṣubdhāḥ sahānugāḥthen were shaken, together with their followers; then grew agitated, along with their retinue

ते दृष्ट्वा सहसा पार्थम्te dṛṣṭvā sahasā pārthamthey, having suddenly seen Partha; those, having abruptly beheld Partha

गोप्तारः सैन्धवस्य तुgoptāraḥ saindhavasya tuthe protectors, indeed, of the Sindhu king; the guardians, indeed, of the Sindhu ruler

चक्रुः नादान् बहुविधान्cakruḥ nādān bahuvidhānraised cries of many kinds; set up manifold shouts

कम्पयन्तः वसुंधराम्kampayantaḥ vasuṃdharāmmaking the earth tremble; shaking the earth, the all-sustaining one

बाणशब्दरवान् च उग्रान्bāṇaśabdaravān ca ugrānand the fierce whistling roar of arrows; and the fierce din of arrows

विमिश्रान् शङ्खनिस्वनैःvimiśrān śaṅkhanisvanaiḥmingled with the blare of conches; intermingled with the sound of conches

प्रादुश्चक्रुः महात्मानःprāduścakruḥ mahātmānaḥthey, the great-souled, sent forth; they, the great-souled ones, produced

अनुवाद

Freed from them, the chariot shone like a cloud driven by the wind. Then the protectors of Jayadratha, together with their followers, were shaken; and these guardians of the Sindhu king, suddenly seeing Partha, raised cries of many kinds, making the earth tremble. A fierce whistling roar of arrows, mingled with the blare of conches, they sent forth, great-souled as they were, along with lion-roars. Hearing that terrible roar arise from your men, Vasudeva and Dhananjaya then blew their conches.

भाष्य

The breaking-free chariot "reje vāyvīrita iva ambudaḥ" — shines like a cloud driven by the wind: the liberated power is likened to a mass of storm-clouds. The clamor of Jayadratha's protectors betrays their fear, for loud is he who trembles for one already doomed. It is significant that against the terrible roar of the many, the two Krishnas answer with the calm voice of their conches. The verse teaches that the vain noise of the multitude is a sign of anxiety, while assured strength answers briefly and with weight.
