देवनागरी
तस्मिंस् तथा वर्तमाने दारुणे नादसंकुले ॥
भीरूणां त्रासजनने शूराणां हर्षवर्धने ॥
प्रवादितासु भेरीषु झर्झरेष्व् आनकेषु च ॥
मृदङ्गेषु च राजेन्द्र वाद्यमानेष्व् अनेकशः ॥

While thus continued that dreadful tumult of roaring, giving birth to terror in the cowardly and multiplying joy in the brave -- when the kettledrums were struck, and the jharjharas and anakas, and the mridangas, O lord of kings, sounded again and again...

One and the same din -- "bhīrūṇāṃ trāsajanane śūrāṇāṃ harṣavardhane": to the timid it is terror, to the valiant, joy. The outer sound is unchanging; what differs is the heart's response: fear and courage hear different things in the same thunder. It is telling that the trial does not create cowardice or courage but only reveals what already fills the person. The verse teaches that the same circumstance discloses what a person is made of within: the same roar of battle crushes one man and lifts another.
