ततः सुमनसः पार्था हते तस्मिन् निशाचरे ॥
चुक्रुशुः सिंहनादांश् च वासांस्य् आदुधुवुश् च ह ॥
तावकाश् च हतं दृष्ट्वा राक्षसेन्द्रं महाबलम् ॥
अलम्बुसं भीमरूपं विशीर्णम् इव पर्वतम् ॥
हाहाकारम् अकुर्वन्त सैन्यानि भरतर्षभ ॥
जनाश् च तद् ददृशिरे रक्षः कौतूहलान्विताः ॥
यदृच्छया निपतितं भूमाव् अङ्गारकं यथा ॥
tataḥ sumanasaḥ pārthā hate tasmin niśācare ||
cukruśuḥ siṃhanādāṃś ca vāsāṃsy ādudhuvuś ca ha ||
tāvakāś ca hataṃ dṛṣṭvā rākṣasendraṃ mahābalam ||
alambusaṃ bhīmarūpaṃ viśīrṇam iva parvatam ||
hāhākāram akurvanta sainyāni bharatarṣabha ||
janāś ca tad dadṛśire rakṣaḥ kautūhalānvitāḥ ||
yadṛcchayā nipatitaṃ bhūmāv aṅgārakaṃ yathā ||
Then the gladdened sons of Pritha, when that night-wanderer was slain, let out lion-roars and waved their garments. But your men, seeing slain the mighty lord of the rakshasas, Alambusa, terrible in form, [fallen] like a shattered mountain, set up a cry of woe, O bull of the Bharatas; and the people looked upon that rakshasa with wonder — fallen upon the earth as though Angaraka [Mars] had chanced to fall from the sky.

The fallen rakshasa is likened to a collapsed mountain and to the ominous planet Mars dropped from the sky: even the death of the terrible is a spectacle that draws every eye. It is telling that the joy of the sons of Pritha is not malice but the relief of those freed from dread. The verse teaches that the downfall of one who sowed fear is a common relief, and the eye lingers on the fallen not out of cruelty but from wonder at how what seemed immovable comes crashing down: the terrible grandeur of evil proves as perishable as everything transient.
