"Listen, O king, how the battle between Karna and Bhima happened, the two of them seeking each other's destruction, like two elephants in a forest. O king, the enraged Vaikartana, overcoming the wrathful Bhima as he advanced — Bhima, the tamer of foes — pierced him with thirty arrows. With swift arrows of gleaming points adorned with gold did Vaikartana strike Bhima, O best of the Bharatas."

The two mighty ones are likened to forest elephants fighting to the death — the image of a blind force that crushes all before it. It is significant that the gold adorning the arrows does not soften their deadliness: the splendor of a weapon only underscores its purpose. The verse teaches that enmity carried to the point of seeking mutual destruction reduces even the greatest to the blind frenzy of beasts, and so it must be quenched before it flares up.
