कर्णो ऽप्य् अन्यद् धनुर् गृह्य हेमपृष्ठं दुरासदम् ॥
विकृष्य च महातेजा व्यसृजत् सायकान् नव ॥
तान् पाण्डुपुत्रश् चिच्छेद नवभिर् नतपर्वभिः ॥
वसुषेणेन निर्मुक्तान् नव राजन् महाशरान् ॥
छित्त्वा भीमो महाराज नादं सिंह इवानदत् ॥
तौ वृषाव् इव नर्दन्तौ बलिनौ वाशितान्तरे ॥
शार्दूलाव् इव चान्योन्यम् अत्यर्थं च ह्य् अगर्जताम् ॥

vikṛṣya ca mahātejā vyasṛjat sāyakān nava ||
tān pāṇḍuputraś ciccheda navabhir nataparvabhiḥ ||

chittvā bhīmo mahārāja nādaṃ siṃha ivānadat ||
tau vṛṣāv iva nardantau balinau vāśitāntare ||
śārdūlāv iva cānyonyam atyarthaṃ ca hy agarjatām ||
"Karna, taking up another bow — gold-backed, unassailable — and drawing it, the greatly resplendent one loosed nine arrows. Those nine mighty arrows loosed by Vasushena, the son of Pandu cut apart with nine smooth-jointed shafts, O king. The two of them, like bellowing bulls, mighty, contending over a cow in heat, and like tigers, roared at one another exceedingly."

Blow meets equal blow: nine arrows cut by nine — a contest of equals knows no easy advantage. It is significant that the men are again likened to bellowing bulls and tigers: the higher enmity flares, the further it drags men down toward the bestial. The verse teaches that equal strength turns a fight into protracted frenzy, and so combat between equals is the most ruinous of all — it does not end quickly, but only multiplies the fury.
