तां कर्णभुजनिर्मुक्ताम् अर्कवैश्वानरप्रभाम् ॥
शक्तिं वियति चिच्छेद भीमः सप्तभिर् आशुगैः ॥
छित्त्वा शक्तिं ततो भीमो निर्मुक्तोरगसंनिभाम् ॥
मार्गमाण इव प्राणान् सूतपुत्रस्य मारिष ॥
प्राहिणोन् नव संरब्धः शरान् बर्हिणवाससः ॥
स्वर्णपुङ्खाञ् शिलाधौतान् यमदण्डोपमान् मृधे ॥

śaktiṃ viyati ciccheda bhīmaḥ saptabhir āśugaiḥ ||
chittvā śaktiṃ tato bhīmo nirmuktoragasaṃnibhām ||
mārgamāṇa iva prāṇān sūtaputrasya māriṣa ||
prāhiṇon nava saṃrabdhaḥ śarān barhiṇavāsasaḥ ||
svarṇapuṅkhāñ śilādhautān yamadaṇḍopamān mṛdhe ||
"That spear, hurled by Karna's hand, blazing with the splendor of sun and fire, Bhima cut apart in the sky with seven swift arrows. Having severed the spear, then Bhima, as if seeking after the very life of the charioteer's son, O venerable one, enraged, loosed in the fray nine arrows fletched with peacock plumes, resembling a sloughed-off snake, with golden nocks whetted on stone, like unto the rod of Yama."

Karna's fearsome throw is cut to pieces in mid-air before reaching its mark: the steadiness of the hand that meets it reduces to nothing even a weapon that fancies itself the spear of Time. It is telling — "mārgamāṇa iva prāṇān" — Bhima as if seeking the very life of his foe: his answer equals the challenge in force. The verse teaches that a blow, however terrible the wind-up, is not yet a strike, and what is hurled in fury is answered not by fear but by an equal resolve.
