उत्सृज्य कर्णं भीमं च प्राद्रवन् सर्वतोदिशम् ॥
te vadhyamānāḥ samare bhīmacāpacyutaiḥ śaraiḥ ||
prādravaṃs tāvakā yodhāḥ kim etad iti cābruvan ||
tato vyudastaṃ tat sainyaṃ sindhusauvīrakauravam ||
protsāritaṃ mahāvegaiḥ karṇapāṇḍavayoḥ śaraiḥ ||
te śarāturabhūyiṣṭhā hatāśvanaravāhanāḥ ||
utsṛjya karṇaṃ bhīmaṃ ca prādravan sarvatodiśam ||
They, being slain in the battle by arrows loosed from Bhima's bow, fled -- your warriors -- crying, "What is this?" Then that army of the Sindhus, Sauviras, and Kauravas was scattered, driven off by the swift arrows of Karna and the Pandava. Sorely afflicted by arrows, with their horses, men, and mounts slain, abandoning Karna and Bhima, they fled in every direction.

The army flees in bewilderment, crying "what is this?": a terror beyond understanding strips away the will to stand. It is telling that they flee from both alike -- from Karna and from Bhima: the shared fury of the two drives everyone away without distinction. The verse teaches that there is a point past which resolve collapses of itself; when destruction rains down from everywhere and beyond comprehension, even the brave turn to flight, not knowing what strikes them.
