ततः प्रावर्तत नदी घोररूपा महाहवे ॥
बभूव च विशेषेण भीरूणां भयवर्धिनी ॥
वारणाश्वमनुष्याणां रुधिरौघसमुद्भवा ॥
संवृता गतसत्त्वैश् च मनुष्यगजवाजिभिः ॥
सानुकर्षपताकैश् च द्विपाश्वरथभूषणैः ॥
स्यन्दनैर् अपविद्धैश् च भग्नचक्राक्षकूबरैः ॥
tataḥ prāvartata nadī ghorarūpā mahāhave ||
babhūva ca viśeṣeṇa bhīrūṇāṃ bhayavardhinī ||
vāraṇāśvamanuṣyāṇāṃ rudhiraughasamudbhavā ||
saṃvṛtā gatasattvaiś ca manuṣyagajavājibhiḥ ||
sānukarṣapatākaiś ca dvipāśvarathabhūṣaṇaiḥ ||
syandanair apaviddhaiś ca bhagnacakrākṣakūbaraiḥ ||
Then a river of terrible aspect began to flow in the great battle, and it became one that especially increased fear among the fainthearted. The blood of elephants, horses, and men flows together into a single river -- an image of war as a torrent in which everything living and everything crafted by hand is drowned. It is telling that this river "increases fear among the fainthearted": the horror of slaughter itself becomes a weapon, breaking the spirit. The verse teaches that war turns both creatures and human handiwork into a flowing ruin; and a river of blood, however grandly sung, is merely the drain of all that once was living and made.
