ततः प्रमुदिता योधाः परिवव्रुर् युधिष्ठिरम् ॥
वृत्रहत्यै यथा देवाः परिवव्रुः पुरंदरम् ॥
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा तव पुत्रस्य मारिष ॥
शरं परमदुर्वारं प्रेषयाम् आस संयुगे ॥
स तेन भृशसंविद्धो निषसाद रथोत्तमे ॥
ततः पाञ्चालसैन्यानां भृशम् आसीद् रवो महान् ॥
हतो राजेति राजेन्द्र मुदितानां समन्ततः ॥
tataḥ pramuditā yodhāḥ parivavrur yudhiṣṭhiram ||
vṛtrahatyai yathā devāḥ parivavruḥ puraṃdaram ||
tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā tava putrasya māriṣa ||
śaraṃ paramadurvāraṃ preṣayām āsa saṃyuge ||
sa tena bhṛśasaṃviddho niṣasāda rathottame ||
tataḥ pāñcālasainyānāṃ bhṛśam āsīd ravo mahān ||
hato rājeti rājendra muditānāṃ samantataḥ ||
Then the rejoicing warriors surrounded Yudhishthira, as the gods surrounded Purandara [Indra] at the slaying of Vritra. Then king Yudhishthira sent at your son, O venerable one, an utterly irresistible arrow in the encounter. He, sorely pierced by it, sank down upon his finest chariot. Then from the armies of the Panchalas there arose a great roar - "the king is slain!" - from those rejoicing on every side.

The army rejoices, believing Duryodhana slain, and honors Yudhishthira as the gods honored Indra after the slaying of Vritra: the victory of the righteous over the fearsome unrighteous one is likened to a celestial triumph. It is telling that the joy is premature - the cry "the king is slain" will prove false. The verse teaches that in the chaos of battle rumor outruns truth; and rejoicing born of hearsay often fades the moment it is revealed that the enemy still lives - a lesson not to hasten to celebrate.
