Seeing Yudhishthira, who was putting his armies to flight, Drona, urged on by your son, showered him with arrows. Drona then, exceedingly enraged, pierced the king with the vayavya weapon; and the king struck down that divine weapon with his own. When that weapon was destroyed, Bharadvaja [Drona] loosed against Yudhishthira the varuna, the yamya, the agneya, the tvashtra, and the savitra.

The duel of divine astras begins — Drona hurls one celestial weapon after another. Tellingly, Yudhishthira, the gentle king, wields them no less skillfully than the master: righteousness does not exclude the highest knowledge. The verse teaches that mastery of fearsome powers demands spiritual maturity as well; and one who, like Yudhishthira, joins dharma to the might of the astras turns them not toward evil but only to repel it.
