विहन्यमानेष्व् अस्त्रेषु द्रोणः क्रोधसमन्वितः ॥
युधिष्ठिरवधप्रेप्सुर् ब्राह्मम् अस्त्रम् उदैरयत् ॥
ततो नाज्ञासिषं किं चिद् घोरेण तमसावृते ॥
सर्वभूतानि च परं त्रासं जग्मुर् महीपते ॥
ब्रह्मास्त्रम् उद्यतं दृष्ट्वा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
ब्रह्मास्त्रेणैव राजेन्द्र तद् अस्त्रं प्रत्यवारयत् ॥
vihanyamāneṣv astreṣu droṇaḥ krodhasamanvitaḥ ||
yudhiṣṭhiravadhaprepsur brāhmam astram udairayat ||
tato nājñāsiṣaṃ kiṃ cid ghoreṇa tamasāvṛte ||
sarvabhūtāni ca paraṃ trāsaṃ jagmur mahīpate ||
brahmāstram udyataṃ dṛṣṭvā kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
brahmāstreṇaiva rājendra tad astraṃ pratyavārayat ||
When his weapons were being destroyed, Drona, filled with wrath and desiring to slay Yudhishthira, raised the weapon of brahma. Then I knew nothing at all, for a terrible darkness covered everything, and the highest terror seized all beings, O lord of the earth. Seeing the brahma-weapon raised, the son of Kunti, Yudhishthira, repelled that weapon with the weapon of brahma itself, O lord of kings.

The brahmastra, the supreme weapon, plunges the world into darkness and terror: its use threatens creation itself. Tellingly, Yudhishthira repels it with its equal, the brahmastra, not allowing destruction to take place. The verse teaches that supreme power demands supreme responsibility; and the meeting of two brahmastras, neutralizing each other, is an image of how the most terrible weapon must not be used but restrained — otherwise it turns against all that exists.
