हते तु पाण्डवे कृष्णो भ्रातरश् चास्य सोदराः ॥
अनर्जुना न शक्ष्यन्ति महीं भोक्तुं कथं चन ॥
तेषु नष्टेषु सर्वेषु पृथिवीयं ससागरा ॥
अयत्नात् कौरवेयस्य वशे स्थास्यति गौतम ॥
सुनीतैर् इह सर्वार्थाः सिध्यन्ते नात्र संशयः ॥
एतम् अर्थम् अहं ज्ञात्वा ततो गर्जामि गौतम ॥
त्वं तु वृद्धश् च विप्रश् च अशक्तश् चापि संयुगे ॥
कृतस्नेहश् च पार्थेषु मोहान् माम् अवमन्यसे ॥
hate tu pāṇḍave kṛṣṇo bhrātaraś cāsya sodarāḥ ||
anarjunā na śakṣyanti mahīṃ bhoktuṃ kathaṃ cana ||
teṣu naṣṭeṣu sarveṣu pṛthivīyaṃ sasāgarā ||
ayatnāt kauraveyasya vaśe sthāsyati gautama ||
sunītair iha sarvārthāḥ sidhyante nātra saṃśayaḥ ||
etam artham ahaṃ jñātvā tato garjāmi gautama ||
tvaṃ tu vṛddhaś ca vipraś ca aśaktaś cāpi saṃyuge ||
kṛtasnehaś ca pārtheṣu mohān mām avamanyase ||
"When Pāṇḍava [Arjuna] is killed, Kṛṣṇa and his own brothers will not be able, without Arjuna, to rule the earth in any way. When they all have perished, this earth with its ocean will, without effort, come under the power of the Kauravya, O Gautama. By good counsel here all aims are accomplished, there is no doubt; knowing this purpose, therefore I roar, O Gautama. But you are old, and a brahmin, and incapable in combat, and attached to the Parthas -- out of delusion you despise me."

Answering rebuke with rebuke, Karna taunts Kripa with his old age, weakness, and partiality toward the Pandavas -- wounded pride snapping back. It is telling that "by good counsel all aims are accomplished" is a true thought spoken from an unjust mouth. The verse teaches that a truth spoken on behalf of the wrong side does not cease to be true, yet it does not excuse one who reviles a wise counselor; anger at the truth only exposes one's own wrongness.
