प्रकम्पितानाम् अभिघातवेगैर्; अभिघ्नतां चापततां जवेन ॥
वक्त्राण्य् अशोभन्त तदा नराणां; वाय्वीरितानीव महाम्बुजानि ॥
महावने दाव इव प्रदीप्ते; यथा प्रभा भास्करस्यापि नश्येत् ॥
तथा तवासीद् ध्वजिनी प्रदीप्ता; महाभये भारत भीमरूपा ॥
तत् संप्रदीप्तं बलम् अस्मदीयं; निशाम्य पार्थास् त्वरितास् तथैव ॥
सर्वेषु सैन्येषु पदातिसंघान्; अचोदयंस् ते ऽथ चक्रुः प्रदीपान् ॥
गजे गजे सप्त कृताः प्रदीपा; रथे रथे चैव दश प्रदीपाः ॥
द्वाव् अश्वपृष्ठे परिपार्श्वतो ऽन्ये; ध्वजेषु चान्ये जघनेषु चान्ये ॥

sarveṣu sainyeṣu padātisaṃghān; acodayaṃs te 'tha cakruḥ pradīpān ||
gaje gaje sapta kṛtāḥ pradīpā; rathe rathe caiva daśa pradīpāḥ ||
dvāv aśvapṛṣṭhe paripārśvato 'nye; dhvajeṣu cānye jaghaneṣu cānye ||
Of those shaken by the force of blows and of those striking, rushing headlong, the faces of men then shone like great lotuses stirred by the wind. As a blazing wildfire in a great forest, at which even the sun's own light would fade, such was your blazing host, in great terror, O Bharata, of grim aspect. Seeing that blazing force of ours, the Parthas, just as swiftly, urged on the foot companies in all their hosts -- and these lit lamps. Seven lamps were placed on each elephant, and ten lamps likewise on each chariot; two on the horse's back, others at the sides, others on the banners, others at the rear.

The faces of the fighters amid the fires are like lotuses under the wind: even in the frenzy of slaughter the verse finds an image of fragile beauty. And in the same breath -- a forest fire before which the sun itself fades: beauty turns into all-consuming flame. It is telling that the Pandavas at once adopt the enemy's light: a good device has no owner, and the wise learn even from an adversary. The verse teaches that a benefit is not refused merely because an enemy suggested it; the discerning take what is right wherever they find it.
