By that light, rising to the heavens, the hosts of gods were roused, O king, and the hosts of gandharvas, yakshas, asuras, and siddhas gathered, and all the apsaras. That [field], thronged with gods and gandharvas, and with hosts of yakshas, lords of the asuras, and apsaras, and with slain heroes ascending to heaven, the battlefield became like a heavenly place. Ablaze with lamps amid the throng of chariots, horses, elephants, with furious warriors and struck, scattered horses, the great force, with chariots, horses, and elephants arrayed, became like the array of gods and asuras. That [battle], thronged with masses of spears like a fierce wind, with great warriors like clouds, with the din of chariots and horses, with a rain of weapons in torrents, with streams of blood for water -- the battle of god-like men that broke out at night. In it, one like a great fire, great of soul, the foremost of brahmins [Drona], scorching the Pandavas with his rays, having reached the zenith like the sun -- so it was, O lord of men, at the close of the rains.

The light of battle rises to the heavens and summons the gods, the gandharvas, and the apsaras -- and with them the fallen heroes ascending on high: the earthly slaughter opens into the heavenly realm. It is telling how the fight is likened to a storm -- spears as a whirlwind, warriors as clouds, weapons as rain, blood as its waters -- and at its center Drona shines like the sun at zenith. The verse teaches that the greatest deeds and sufferings of man are not confined to earth: beyond what is seen they echo in the world above, and both the warrior's feat and his fall are witnessed by the eyes of the celestials.
