वध्यमानानि सैन्यानि समन्तात् तैर् महारथैः ॥
तमसा रजसा चैव समन्ताद् विप्रदुद्रुवुः ॥
ते सर्वतो विद्रवन्तो योधा वित्रस्तचेतसः ॥
अहन्यन्त महाराज धावमानाश् च संयुगे ॥
महारथसहस्राणि जघ्नुर् अन्योन्यम् आहवे ॥
अन्धे तमसि मूढानि पुत्रस्य तव मन्त्रिते ॥
ततः सर्वाणि सैन्यानि सेनागोपाश् च भारत ॥
व्यमुह्यन्त रणे तत्र तमसा संवृते सति ॥
vadhyamānāni sainyāni samantāt tair mahārathaiḥ ||
tamasā rajasā caiva samantād vipradudruvuḥ ||
te sarvato vidravanto yodhā vitrastacetasaḥ ||
ahanyanta mahārāja dhāvamānāś ca saṃyuge ||
mahārathasahasrāṇi jaghnur anyonyam āhave ||
andhe tamasi mūḍhāni putrasya tava mantrite ||
tataḥ sarvāṇi sainyāni senāgopāś ca bhārata ||
vyamuhyanta raṇe tatra tamasā saṃvṛte sati ||
Being slaughtered on every side by those great warriors, and by darkness and dust as well, the hosts scattered in every direction. Fleeing on all sides, their minds numbed by fear, the warriors were destroyed, O great king, cut down even as they ran in the clash. Thousands of great warriors, dazed in the blind dark, struck one another down in battle -- at the design of your son. Then all the hosts and their commanders, O Bharata, grew bewildered there in the battle, when the darkness had closed in all around.

Darkness turns an army against itself: thousands strike down their own without telling them apart. It is telling that Sanjaya traces this straight back to "the design of your son": the night battle is Duryodhana's making, and its fruit is mutual slaughter in the blind. The verse teaches that a design born of greed and haste turns against the one who conceived it; whoever drives a battle into darkness reaps not victory but confusion, in which both sides perish without distinction.
