संजय उवाच
सहदेवम् अथायान्तं द्रोणप्रेप्सुं विशां पते ॥
कर्णो वैकर्तनो युद्धे वारयाम् आस भारत ॥
सहदेवस् तु राधेयं विद्ध्वा नवभिर् आशुगैः ॥
पुनर् विव्याध दशभिर् निशितैर् नतपर्वभिः ॥
तं कर्णः प्रतिविव्याध शतेन नतपर्वणाम् ॥
सज्यं चास्य धनुः शीघ्रं चिच्छेद लघुहस्तवत् ॥
ततो ऽन्यद् धनुर् आदाय माद्रीपुत्रः प्रतापवान् ॥
कर्णं विव्याध विंशत्या तद् अद्भुतम् इवाभवत् ॥

sahadevas tu rādheyaṃ viddhvā navabhir āśugaiḥ ||
punar vivyādha daśabhir niśitair nataparvabhiḥ ||
taṃ karṇaḥ prativivyādha śatena nataparvaṇām ||
sajyaṃ cāsya dhanuḥ śīghraṃ ciccheda laghuhastavat ||
tato 'nyad dhanur ādāya mādrīputraḥ pratāpavān ||
karṇaṃ vivyādha viṃśatyā tad adbhutam ivābhavat ||
Then at the advancing Sahadeva, rushing toward Drona, O lord of peoples, Karna Vaikartana checked him in battle, O Bharata. And Sahadeva, having pierced Radheya [Karna] with nine swift arrows, again pierced him with ten sharp, smooth-jointed ones. Him Karna pierced in reply with a hundred smooth-jointed arrows and swiftly cut his strung bow, deft-handed. Then, taking another bow, the son of Madri [Sahadeva], valiant, pierced Karna with twenty arrows; and it was as though a wonder.

The young Sahadeva does not yield to Karna, and his steadfastness is called "as though a wonder": the youngest of the brothers holds his ground against the greatest of archers. It is telling that the narrative honors even the one destined to fall. The verse teaches that a warrior's worth lies not in the outcome but in how he fights: to hold, even briefly, against a superior foe is itself a feat; and the valor of the young, though doomed to defeat, is no less than the valor of the victor.
