The charioteer carried him off from the battle, wounded by arrows. Then that great army fled in the night, O Bharata, being slain by hundreds of arrows by Shalya, resplendent in battle. Seeing that fleeing army, Vasudeva and Dhananjaya [Arjuna] advanced there, O lord of kings, to where Shalya stood. Against those two came forth, O king, the lord of the rakshasas, Alambusa, mounted on an excellent chariot fitted with eight wheels, yoked with horse-faced pishachas, terrible to behold.

When Shalya sweeps the army before him, Krishna and Arjuna go to the rescue -- where the breach is, there the greatest go. Against them rises a rakshasa on a monstrous chariot drawn by horse-faced demons: the very embodiment of dharma is met by evil incarnate. It is telling that this dreadful barrier is set against Arjuna together with Krishna. The verse teaches that the forces of darkness are met by the union of valor and divine guidance; and however terrible the form evil wears, it retreats where truth walks hand in hand with the Lord.
