स बभौ राक्षसो राजन् भिन्नाञ्जनचयोपमः ॥
रुरोधार्जुनम् आयान्तं प्रभञ्जनम् इवाद्रिराट् ॥
किरन् बाणगणान् राजञ् शतशो ऽर्जुनमूर्धनि ॥
अतितीव्रम् अभूद् युद्धं नरराक्षसयोर् मृधे ॥
द्रष्टॄणां प्रीतिजननं सर्वेषां भरतर्षभ ॥
तम् अर्जुनः शतेनैव पत्रिणाम् अभ्यताडयत् ॥
नवभिश् च शितैर् बाणैश् चिच्छेद ध्वजम् उच्छ्रितम् ॥
सारथिं च त्रिभिर् बाणैस् त्रिभिर् एव त्रिवेणुकम् ॥
धनुर् एकेन चिच्छेद चतुर्भिश् चतुरो हयान् ॥
विरथस्योद्यतं खड्गं शरेणास्य द्विधाच्छिनत् ॥
sa babhau rākṣaso rājan bhinnāñjanacayopamaḥ ||
rurodhārjunam āyāntaṃ prabhañjanam ivādrirāṭ ||
kiran bāṇagaṇān rājañ śataśo 'rjunamūrdhani ||
atitīvram abhūd yuddhaṃ nararākṣasayor mṛdhe ||
draṣṭṝṇāṃ prītijananaṃ sarveṣāṃ bharatarṣabha ||
tam arjunaḥ śatenaiva patriṇām abhyatāḍayat ||
navabhiś ca śitair bāṇaiś ciccheda dhvajam ucchritam ||
sārathiṃ ca tribhir bāṇais tribhir eva triveṇukam ||
dhanur ekena ciccheda caturbhiś caturo hayān ||
virathasyodyataṃ khaḍgaṃ śareṇāsya dvidhācchinat ||
That rakshasa shone, O king, like a heap of crushed antimony; he blocked the advancing Arjuna, as a king of mountains blocks the tempest, scattering masses of arrows, O king, by hundreds on Arjuna's head. Most fierce was the battle of man and rakshasa in that clash. Arjuna struck him with a hundred feathered arrows and with nine sharp shafts cut down the upraised standard. And the charioteer with three arrows, with three the triple yoke-pole, the bow he cut with one, and with four the four horses.

Alambusa rises before Arjuna, "as a king of mountains before the tempest" -- seeming unconquerable. But Arjuna methodically dismantles his chariot: standard, charioteer, pole, bow, horses -- each with a precise measure of arrows. Telling is this calm, deliberate mastery over the rakshasa's terror. The verse teaches that the fearsome might of evil yields not to a desperate outburst but to clear, measured action; and one who is not shaken by a dreadful form takes the obstacle apart piece by piece and turns the terrible into the powerless.
