ततस् तु तावकाः सर्वे परिवार्य सुतं तव ॥
अभ्यवर्तन्त संग्रामे महत्या सेनया वृताः ॥
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं तव तेषां च भारत ॥
निशीथे दारुणे काले यमराष्ट्रविवर्धनम् ॥

Then all your warriors, surrounding your son, advanced into the battle, accompanied by a great army. Then the battle between your men and theirs broke out, O Bharata, at midnight, in that dreadful hour, swelling the kingdom of Yama.

The chapter closes with the image of a midnight slaughter that "swells the kingdom of Yama": every fresh blow only adds to the count of the dead. It is telling that the battle is named by its fruit -- the growth of death's domain. The verse teaches a sober view of what war yields: not glory, not victory, but a swelling abode of the departed; and under cover of night, when every distinction is blotted out, battle stands revealed for what it is -- unceasing labor spent filling the kingdom of Yama.
